Company Overview

MEDC Company Headquarters

Designers and manufacturers of alarm, signal, control and communications equipment since 1975, MEDC has developed a range of products specifically designed for use in areas where harsh environmental conditions prevail and where there is a risk of explosion due to the presence of flammable atmospheres both offshore and onshore.

MEDC pioneered the use of glass reinforced polyester (GRP) in explosion-proof products. The advantages of GRP products are that a lower capital cost combined with minimal maintenance and extended lifetime thus lowering the cost of ownership. The innovative use of GRP has now been extended to include a range of uncertified (safe area) equipment for use in harsh industrial & marine environments.

Explosion-proof products include manual call points, status lamps, beacons/strobes, sounders/horns, alarm bells, speakers, control units, control stations, control panels, junction boxes, terminal boxes, distribution panels/boards.

Products are available in a range of certifications including ATEX, UL, CSA and GOST. A wide variety of these products are held in stock for despatch within 24 hours of ordering. MEDC also offers a range of uncertified equipment for harsh industrial & marine environments and the Next Two range of loudspeakers for safe areas / interiors.

Manual Call Points: These products are available in breakglass and pushbutton versions. These explosion-proof call points are available as intrinsically safe (Eexia), flameproof (EExd) versions. Many call point options are available including body colour, lift flaps and resistors.

Status Lamps: These versatile status lights are available with LED, Xenon, filament and fluorescent lights. Explosion-proof and uncertified versions are available.

Beacons/Strobes: These certified beacons are suitable for use where light weight combined with corrosion resistance and strength is required. Beacons are available in LED, Xenon, rotating, beacon/sounder combination and steady beacon versions.

Sounders/Horns: The MEDC range of lightweight, flameproof sounders have been designed for the most hostile environments. Outputs of 103dB(A) to 118dB(A) at 1 m are available. A new voice sounder has recently been launched; this unit offers up to 20 seconds of speech which can be recorded via an integral microphone or an input from an external source. The unit incorporates a variable delay allowing speech to be repeated at equal intervals of up to approximately 15 seconds.

Alarm Bell: This explosion-proof bell is manufactured from cast iron is available in d.c. and a.c. versions and can be painted to customer's specification.

Loudspeakers: MEDC offer explosion-proof loudspeakers for use in potentially explosive gas & dust atmospheres which use MEDC proprietorial GRP technology to offer a cost effective, robust and corrosion-free solution to metal loudspeakers. With power ratings up to 25W this range is suitable for PA and VA applications. In addition, MEDC offer the Next Two range of loudspeakers for use in industrial, commercial and leisure applications and are suitable for areas which do not require certification.

Control & Distribution Units, Panels & Boards: This range of custom built control & distribution units can be used individually or combined to provide hazardous area systems for indoor or outdoor use. MEDC have a wide experience of providing complete control & distribution systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Control Stations: These control stations are suitable for use in all gas groups including hydrogen. These rugged enclosures are manufactured from a UV stable, glass reinforced polyester. Cover fixing screws are stainless steel thus ensuring a corrosion-free product.

Junction Boxes: These GRP junction boxes have a robust design, coupled with corrosion-free GRP and a high ingress protection rating thus ensuring a long life, low maintenance product.

Terminal Boxes: This comprehensive range of GRP terminal boxes offers a variety of enclosure sizes, terminals and cable entries.

Explosion Proof Safety Systems

MEDC System Components

MEDC

The UK-based company MEDC part of Cooper Industries a 5B$ US based corporation - has been a leading manufacturer of explosion proof equipment made from metals for over 30 years, but more recently has pioneered the introduction of GRP for explosion proof equipment. In 1993 it launched the first products made from GRP and while the company continues to offer a choice of metal, alloy or GRP for its range of fire and gas safety products, an increasing number of customers are switching to the new material. Brian Walder, the managing director of MEDC, states: “customers have benefited from MEDC’s innovative technology by replacing traditionally used alloys and stainless steel. The lower purchase price in combination with reduced maintenance and longer lifetimes have significantly reduced the cost of ownership. For our key partners, GRP has become the material of choice for their oil and gas installations'.

MEDC has spent almost 15 years researching, designing and manufacturing GRP products for the precise environments encountered in the oil and gas sector, giving them the appropriate combination of properties. The range of products available includes manual alarm call points, heat detectors, beacons, status lamps, loudspeakers and sounders.

In addition to corrosion resistance, GRP will resist attack by most acids, alkalis and chemicals. It is just as resistant to concentrated acids and alkalis as most metal products. GRP meets the flammability requirements of the BSI standard EN60079.

Tests for UV stability have also shown that a service life of over 50 years can be expected. Neither is GRP prone to temperature-related degradation, as thermoplastics can be, allowing it to perform under the most arduous temperature extremes over many years.

MEDCs GRP products are explosion-proof certified for many standards, including ATEX, UL, CSA, GOST R&K and Chinese approvals.

With no corrosion, users can practically 'fit and forget' GRP field equipment. Brian Walder says “We know that maintenance routines still need to be carried out, so that adherence to local requirements can be demonstrated. However we have found that our users need fewer inspections to comply, reducing maintenance costs”. ”The combined properties of strength, lightness and corrosion resistance are increasingly making GRP the preferred choice of many end users.”
